Cloth diapering takes a lot of responsibility or commitment because you have to wash it and take good care of them too (just like your clothes), unlike in using disposables where you can just throw away after use.
Using the modern cloth diapers may be a bit complex but it's not complicated. It may not be easy for some to understand everything at first, some takes time to learn but believe me, it's worth it.
Here are some DOs and DON'Ts and PROS and CONS in cloth diapering:
- DO
- DON'T
- Leave diapers unwashed/soiled for more than 2 days (as much as possible).
- Soak the diaper shells for more than a hour. Being soaked too long in water or soapy water may damage the laminated fabric and elastics as well.
- Use fabric conditioners, bleach, vinegar, baking soda, harsh and too much detergent in washing the diapers. It might damage the elastics and leave residues that can build up on the cloth and will affect the absorbency capacity of the diapers.
- Use an ointment or just any other baby bottom topical products. It may also leave unwanted residues on the cloth that can cause repelling. There are cloth diaper safe products that you can use on your baby's bottom.
- PROS
- You can really save lots of money (I can show a computation!)
- You can help in saving the mother earth.
- Cloth diapers don't cause bottom rashes, unless the weather's too hot, you don't change diapers regularly or you didn't washed it properly.
- Cloth diapers are breathable
- and fashionable ;)
- CONS
- You'll always bring a wet bag when going out.
- You'll always have to bring home soiled diapers.
- You'll wash diapers (extra work)
- You have to use a disposable or washable diaper liner if you really have to use a "not cloth diaper safe product" on your baby's bottom.
So, do you still want to do cloth diapering? hihi! Don't be discouraged. I am just saying what you really have to know. I hope it's obvious that I am promoting cloth diapering. I am exclusively cloth diapering my Sherrie for 6 months now and I have no plans of going back to disposables. It's quite challenging at first but everyone got used to it. Just a little sacrifice for mother earth, for saving money and for a healthier and natural way of diapering. Switch to cloth!! :D
