Washing Modern Cloth Diapers

After prewashing your new nappies, you can already wash them normally like how you wash your clothes but don't mix your diapers with your other laundry. Wash your diapers separately and here are other important reminders that you should know:

  • Before washing, remove inserts from diaper shells, unsnap everything and secure all velcros on the laundry tabs.
  •  Most detergents today are full of harsh chemicals so it is really recommended to use a cloth diaper safe detergents. These are any detergent that is biodegradable, mild, softener-free, bleach-free, brighteners-free, dye-free etc. and of course, you can't also use any bleach and fabric softeners as well as baking soda and vinegar. These may all build unwanted residues to your diapers and make them less absorbent or worse, it can cause allergy to your baby. There are detergents that were specifically made for cloth diapers. Also, I believe that any laundry detergent for babies available in the market (like Baby Clean, Pigeon, Cycles, Smart Steps, Lunacare) are also cloth diaper safe. Perla, Calla, Tide "Original", Tough Love of HHN, and Charlie's soap are also safe to use. It is highly recommended to use cloth diaper safe detergents however, it is not required.. so if you're going to use other detergents in washing your diapers (specially those detergents with fabric conditioner and bleach) just lessen the amount that you will use. Put only half of what is usually instructed on the packaging of detergent.

Prewashing Cloth Diapers

The next thing you'll do after you received your fluffy mail is to prewash :D

Prewash diaper shells and microfiber inserts normally, wet, put on detergent, wash, rinse and dry.. but not for inserts that is bamboo and hemp.

Bamboo and hemp are natural fibers that is more absorbent. They have oil. So they need to be prepped first before prewashing. Soak them in hot water for couple of hours to remove the oil.

Your diapers will achieve their full absorbency after about 10 washes or more.
