Cost comparison between Disposables and Modern Cloth Diapers

Well, this question is like a math problem. Your answer can't be honored unless you justify it with your solutions.

So let me show you my computaions... (by the way, this is all based on prices of products/services in the Philippines)

1. DISPOSABLE DIAPERS or DD in short

Given:
6        - (A) ave. price of a single DD
7        - (B) ave. number of diapers that your baby is using everyday
365    - (C) days in a year
2.5     - (D) ave. number of years that your baby will use diapers

Equations:
  • A x B = ____ x C = ____ x D = ave. total price

The Kinds that I use in Cloth Diapering

There are many kinds of cloth diapers such as flats, prefolds, fitteds, hybrid fitteds, All in One (AIO), All in Two (AI2), Pocket Diapers etc. but I will only talk about the kinds that I've used so far...

but before that let me start with the different kinds of inserts first
  1. Microfiber (mf) - comes in 3 layers or 4 layers of microfiber cloth. The most common, least absorbent and the fastest to dry after washing. Hardest to deodorize. Don't usually deform inside the shell.
  2. Bamboo Microfiber (bmf) - has 2 layers of bamboo and 2 layers of microfiber cloth. More absorbent than the microfiber insert, takes more time to dry, soft and sometimes folds or deforms inside the shell.
  3. Stay Dry Bamboo Microfiber - same as bamboo microfiber but has a micro suede top layer that makes its surface stay dry.
  4. Stay Dry Trifold Bamboo aka Trifold - has 2 layers of bamboo cloth and 1 layer of micro suede. Square in shape, big enough to fold it into three to make it thicker. It is faster to dry than bamboo microfiber but slower to dry than the microfiber. It also folds and deforms sometime.
  5. Stay Dry Charcoal Bamboo Microfiber aka Charcoal - has 2 layers of micro fleece charcoal bamboo cloth and 3 layers of microfiber. Stiff, does not deform, fold or crumple inside the shell. It's not really hard to dry this, it's just like the trifold. Don't usually leak because both sides are stay dry.

The Good and Bad of Modern Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapering takes a lot of responsibility or commitment because you have to wash it and take good care of them too (just like your clothes), unlike in using disposables where you can just throw away after use.

Using the modern cloth diapers may be a bit complex but it's not complicated. It may not be easy for some to understand everything at first, some takes time to learn but believe me, it's worth it.

Here are some DOs and DON'Ts and PROS and CONS in cloth diapering:
  • DO
    • Prewash, of course
    • Use mild, biodegradable detergent in washing the diapers
    • Line dry under the sun, it has a natural bleaching effect and it also deodorizes the diapers.
    • Wash the poop-ed diapers ASAP

The Modern Cloth Diapers

Many mummies (or parents or guardians) already know about this modern cloth diapers, but I still want to share this because it is not really familiar for most mommies I know.

The modern cloth diapers were just like upgraded cloth diapers. It is usually composed of an insert and a shell. The insert is an absorbent material that you put inside the shell, and the shell holds the insert and prevent leaks. The shell is made from a polyurethane laminated fabric or PUL, it is water proof and breathable.

This is a Kawaii pocket diaper. (left - shell; right - insert)
Unlike our traditional lampin or flat diapers, we can use these diapers just like how we use the disposables. Even though it is cloth, we can use it longer and change diapers every 2-3 hours. It can even be used overnight (for like 8 hrs.++). Thanks to the suede or fleece cloth that gives the diaper a stay dry feeling just like the disposables.
